Chapter Twenty
They had to stop talking once they returned to the busy part of town. Aderyn could imagine the commotion if the wrong person overheard Owen talking about his world. When they returned to the inn, the others hadnât come back yet, and it was nearly dinnertime. They claimed a table in the gradually filling taproom and sat in companionable silence. One of the things Aderyn liked best about her growing friendship with Owen was how they didnât need to fill the air with talk to feel comfortable together. Maybe that was because Owen was an otherworlder, or maybe it was because Aderyn never worried about what Owen thought of her, whether he was silently judging her. Or maybe it was none of those things. She was grateful for it anyway.
Isold and Weston returned about twenty minutes later. âWhat, the spellslingerâs not back yet?â Weston said, dropping heavily into a chair beside Owen. âI say we eat without her.â
âI didnât think you disliked Livia,â Aderyn said.
âDislike? I donât dislike her. Sheâs the one who disapproves of me.â Weston said this with a grin. âI bet she feels guilty at how she doesnât rise early, and she turns that into criticizing my habits.â
âI donât think youâre right,â Isold said. âYou take every opportunity to needle her about sleeping late, so if thereâs anyone who should feel guilty, itâs you.â
âI refuse to dignify that with a response,â Weston said loftily. âBesides, Moonlighters and Earthbreakers donât get along. Well-known fact.â
âIâve never heard that,â Aderyn said.
âItâs true! Earthbreakers are all direct and to the point, and Moonlighters are creatures of misdirection. Definite conflict, built in.â
âUh-huh,â Aderyn said. She waved at Livia, whoâd just entered the taproom and was scanning it. âGo ahead and tell Livia your theory. I bet she makes you eat it.â
âIâm sorry Iâm late,â Livia said as she approached. âMy parents had guests who wanted to hear about my adventures.â
âItâs fine,â Owen said. âWere they glad to see you? Your parents, I mean?â
âSurprised.â Livia didnât sound happy. âThey werenât expecting me.â
âWell, we did clear that goblin nest quickly,â Aderyn said.
Livia shook her head. âI mean they werenât expecting me to succeed at all. I canât believe my own parents didnât have faith in my abilities.â
âBut you were only level one or two,â Weston said. He looked serious now, with no sign of frivolous humor. âThat was quite a feat for someone of that level. Their disbelief doesnât have to be personal.â
âDonât defend them,â Livia said. âIâm telling you they didnât think I was capable, regardless of level or skill.â
âHey, Iâm just pointing outâ ââ
âYou can keep your pointing to yourself,â Livia snapped.
âStop,â Owen said. âYou both have the best of intentions and you need to not assume otherwise. Thatâs not how teams work.â
Livia wiped her eyes. âYouâre right. Iâm sorry, Weston.â
âI should have taken your side,â Weston said. âItâs not like I even know your parents. They might be awful people.â
âTheyâre not. Theyâre justâI donât know what to call it. Iâm the youngest, and Iâve never tried to make anything of myself.
